In this module, students will learn vocabulary and useful phrases to talk about common medical tests and results. They will practice asking and answering questions about when and how tests are done, and explaining results to patients. The grammar focus will be on using the Passive Voice (Present and Past) to describe processes and results in a professional way.
En este módulo, los estudiantes aprenderán vocabulario y frases útiles para hablar de pruebas médicas y resultados. What is and what is the use:
Que es y como se usa
The Passive Voice is a grammatical structure used when the focus is on the action or the result of the action, not on the person who does it. La voz pasiva es una estructura gramatical que se usa cuando el enfoque está en la acción o en el resultado de la acción, no en la persona que la realiza.
For example: “The blood test was done yesterday.” The important information here is that the test was done, not who did it. Por ejemplo: “The blood test was done yesterday” (El análisis de sangre fue hecho ayer). Lo importante aquí es que la prueba fue realizada, no quién la hizo.
We use the Passive Voice in medical contexts when explaining tests, procedures, and results to patients in a clear and professional way. This way, the focus is on the medical process, not on the staff performing it. En contextos médicos, usamos la voz pasiva para explicar pruebas, procedimientos y resultados a los pacientes de manera clara y profesional. Así, el énfasis está en el proceso médico, no en el personal que lo lleva a cabo.

- Do not use (Common Errors)
❌ Error 1: Confusing passive with active voice
- “The nurse did the test” (Active)
- ❌ “The test did by the nurse” (Incorrect)
- ✅ “The test was done by the nurse” (Correct)
Muchos estudiantes olvidan usar el verbo to be antes del participio pasado. La voz pasiva siempre necesita am/is/are/was/were + participio pasado.
❌ Error 2: Using the base verb instead of the past participle
- ❌ “The X-ray was take”
- ✅ “The X-ray was taken”
El verbo principal debe ir en participio pasado, no en infinitivo ni en pasado simple.
❌ Error 3: Overusing the agent (“by…”)
- “The test was done by the nurse” (Correct, but not always necessary).
- Better: “The test was done yesterday” (Focus on result).
En la voz pasiva, muchas veces no necesitamos decir quién hizo la acción, porque lo importante es el resultado o el procedimiento.
