Third Conditional (If + past perfect, would have + past participle)
What is and what is the use:
Que es y como se usa
The Third Conditional is used to talk about hypothetical situations in the past — things that did not happen, but that we imagine with different outcomes.
It is very common in job interviews, where candidates often need to explain past experiences, reflect on mistakes, or show what they would have done differently.
- Form:
👉 If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Example:
- If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.
→ Si hubiera estudiado más, habría pasado el examen.
Structure
Positive:
- If + subject + had + past participle, subject + would have + past participle.
- If I had prepared better, I would have answered all the questions confidently.
- Si me hubiera preparado mejor, habría respondido todas las preguntas con confianza.
Negative:
- If + subject + had not (hadn’t) + past participle, subject + would not have (wouldn’t have) + past participle.
- If I hadn’t been nervous, I would have performed better.
- Si no hubiera estado nervioso, me habría desempeñado mejor.
Question:
- What would have happened if + subject + had + past participle?
- What would you have done if the interviewer had asked about your weaknesses?
- ¿Qué habrías hecho si el entrevistador te hubiera preguntado por tus debilidades?

- Demonstrates critical thinking: employers value candidates who can reflect on past situations.
- Projects professional maturity: you acknowledge what you could have done differently.
- Strengthens your answers to behavioral questions: e.g., “What would you have done if…?”
