Que es y como se usa
The Present Perfect is a tense in English that connects the past with the present. El Presente Perfecto es un tiempo en inglés que conecta el pasado con el presente.
We use it to talk about actions or experiences that happened at some time before now, but the exact time is not important. Lo usamos para hablar de acciones o experiencias que ocurrieron en algún momento antes de ahora, pero el tiempo exacto no es importante.
In medical contexts, it is very useful to describe a patient’s history, illnesses, or treatments. En contextos médicos, es muy útil para describir los antecedentes de un paciente, enfermedades o tratamientos.
Main Uses / Usos principales:
- To talk about life experiences (without saying exactly when). Para hablar de experiencias de vida (sin decir exactamente cuándo).
👉 Example: The patient has had asthma since childhood. / El paciente ha tenido asma desde la infancia. - To talk about actions that started in the past and continue until now. Para hablar de acciones que empezaron en el pasado y continúan hasta ahora.
👉 Example: She has had diabetes for five years. / Ella ha tenido diabetes por cinco años. - To describe past events that have importance in the present. Para describir eventos pasados que tienen importancia en el presente.
👉 Example: The nurse has checked the medical record. / La enfermera ha revisado el historial médico.
- How to use (Structure)

- Do not use (Common Errors)
❌ Usar el pasado simple en vez del presente perfecto
- Error: The patient had asthma since childhood.
- Correcto: The patient has had asthma since childhood.
👉 En español, muchos estudiantes usan el pasado simple porque en nuestra lengua decimos “tuvo asma desde niño”, pero en inglés se necesita el Present Perfect.
❌ Olvidar “have/has”
- Error: She had surgery last year?
- Correcto: Has she had surgery?
👉 En inglés siempre se necesita “have/has” como auxiliar en el Present Perfect.
❌ Confundir “for” y “since”
- Error: He has had diabetes since five years.
- Correcto: He has had diabetes for five years.
👉 “Since” se usa con un punto en el tiempo (since 2010), y “for” con un período de tiempo (for five years).
