What is and what is the use:

Que es y como se usa

The imperatives are used to give direct instructions, orders, or advice to someone. In nursing, it is essential to guide patients clearly and politely, so let’s learn how to do it correctly.

  • How to use it / Structure:
  • Affirmative: Base form of the verb (Infinitive).

Sit down. → Siéntese.

  • Negative: Don’t + base form (Infinitive).

Don’t move. → No se mueva.

  • Common mistakes:
  • Incorrect: You sit down please.
  • Correct: Sit down, please.
  • Examples in context:
  • Open your eyes (Abra sus ojos).
  • Don’t walk alone (No camine solo).

  • Follow me, please (Sígame, por favor).

Can / Can’t (Ability and Permission)

Verbo to be

What is it and what is the use:

Que es y como se usa

Can is used to express ability or permission. Can’t is used to show lack of ability or prohibition. Very common in clinical contexts to ask what a patient can or cannot do.

Can is a modal verb used to express:

  1. Ability (what someone is able to do).

I can walk. → Yo puedo caminar.

  1. Permission (what is allowed).

You can drink water now. → Usted puede beber agua ahora.

Can’t (cannot) is used to express:

  1. Lack of ability.

I can’t move my leg. → No puedo mover mi pierna.

  1. Prohibition.

You can’t eat before the surgery. → No puede comer antes de la cirugía.

  • How to use it / Structure:
  • Affirmative: Subject + can + verb.

You can sit here (Usted puede sentarse aquí).

  • Negative: Subject + can’t + verb.

You can’t eat before the test (Usted no puede comer antes del examen).

  • Questions: Can + subject + verb?

Can you raise your arm? (¿Puede levantar su brazo?).

  • Incorrect: He cans walk. Correct: He can walk.
  • Incorrect: She don’t can eat. Correct: She can’t eat.
