Countable nouns are nouns that we can count as individual items. Los sustantivos contables son sustantivos que podemos contar como objetos individuales.

They have singular and plural forms. Tienen forma singular y plural.

We can use numbers before them: one, two, three… Podemos usar números delante de ellos: uno, dos, tres…

Examples: one syringe, two syringes; one bed, three beds. Ejemplo: una jeringa, dos jeringas; una cama, tres camas.

Uncountable nouns are nouns that we cannot count individually because they are seen as a whole, a substance, or a concept. Los sustantivos incontables son sustantivos que no podemos contar individualmente porque se ven como un todo, una sustancia o un concepto.

They do not have plural forms. No tienen forma plural.

We cannot use numbers directly before them. No podemos usar números directamente delante de ellos.

Instead, we use words like “some, much, a lot of” or units/containers. En su lugar usamos palabras como “algo de, mucho, bastante” o unidades/contenedores.

Examples: some water, much cotton, a lot of alcohol. Ejemplos: algo de agua, mucho algodón, bastante alcohol.

Use in nursing context: Nurses need to know the difference because some objects (countable) can be given in exact numbers (two syringes), while others (uncountable) are measured in quantity or amount (some cotton, some alcohol).  Uso en el contexto de enfermería: Las enfermeras necesitan conocer la diferencia porque algunos objetos (contables) pueden darse en números exactos (dos jeringas), mientras que otros (incontables) se miden en cantidad o volumen (algo de algodón, algo de alcohol).
